Classical Music

There are not many people who have not heard of classical music. Just about everybody will have listened to it at some point – even if they weren’t aware of what it was they were hearing. Many radio and television advertisements make use of famous pieces of classical music, and there are even some who have had music written in the classical style to help market their wares. In spite of this, the number of people who really appreciate or make the effort to understand this form of music is relatively small compared to more popular forms. Many of those who hear it consciously for the first time are agreeably amazed to find how pleasurable this form of music can be to listen to.

The term ‘classical music’ is actually a little misleading to the uninitiated, as it covers several styles of music – not just one. There are several styles or genres of music under this broad umbrella. These include music from the Romantic era, the Classical era, and the Baroque. Each of these era’s composers produced music that generally has quite a specific feel and format. For example music from the Romantic era is defined on Wikipedia as music that “.. struggled to increase emotional expression and power to describe these deeper truths…”

People curious to try listening to classical music have many options available to them. Tuning into the local radio station is a great way to start as the presenters will usually give some sort of narrative about how the particular piece of music came to be written, and often talk about the composer also. Another really good option is to go to the local music store – or even an online music store – and purchase a ‘collection’ of pieces from a certain era. Personally, I’d recommend starting with a collection of popular Baroque or Classical piece. Most often, these collections are of fairly well known pieces that are easy to listen to, particularly for a beginner. Some classical music, such as the more contemporary composers, can be very challenging to the ear of a classical music novice.

Whichever way you choose to start, I highly recommend that you do. Classical music can bring a richness to you’re your listening life that you don’t even realize you are missing out on. Try it soon.

My favorite band- though not strictly classical definitely worth listening to!l
